9×9 Go — how to play

  1. Black plays first on the 9×9 intersections. Place one stone each turn. Orthogonally connected stones form a group; adjacent empty intersections are liberties.
  2. An opposing group with no liberties is captured. You cannot play a move that leaves your own group without liberties, unless it captures enough opposing stones to gain a liberty.
  3. Positional superko: a placement cannot recreate any previous board position. Passing is permitted. Two consecutive passes begin scoring.
  4. Area scoring counts living stones plus empty regions bordered by only one color. White receives 6.5 komi. Captured-stone counts are informational and are not added to area score.
  5. At scoring, click a group to propose it as dead or alive. Any change clears both approvals. Both players must accept the same proposal before the match ends. If you disagree, resume play.
  6. The computer is a casual learning opponent, not a strong Go engine. In solo scoring, mark dead groups carefully before accepting; the computer accepts your proposal.

Online deals and dice come from the server. In solo mode you play seat 1; the other seats are computer opponents.
